The excerpts are selected from the 51-page lecture in volume III of the Dresden Edition of "The Works of Robert G. Ingersoll" (New York: The Dresden Publishing Co., C. P. Farrell, 1902). An Illinois politician and the foremost orator of the late nineteenth century, Ingersoll (1833-1899) lectured across America on literary, political, and philosophical topics. He delivered the lecture "Abraham Lincoln" more than 70 times.
